Curressia McFarland Brown, a native of Meridian, Mississippi, has made Leflore County home since 1996. The proud daughter of Curby and Ruby McFarland, she is an educational product of the Meridian Public Schools, Rust College (Holly Springs, MS), the University of Mississippi School of Education (Oxford, MS), and the University of Mississippi School of Law (Oxford, MS). Her academic credentials include Bachelor’s degrees in Mass Communications and Political Science, a Master’s of Education in Higher Education, and the Juris Doctor.
Professionally, she has worked in the areas of public relations, radio and television broadcasting, community college and university teaching, and college administration.
December 31, 2021, she retired as Chair of the Department of Business Administration after more than 24 years of service to MVSU and more than 30 years in higher education
A consultant in the areas of education, team building, leadership and servant leadership, Dr. Brown faithfully serves her congregation as the Minister of Music and Organist, a Sunday School teacher and Youth Leader. She is a certified Dean of Christian Education and serves the General Missionary Baptist State Convention Young People’s Department as State Liaison and the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc.’s Youth and Young Adult Auxiliary as Coordinator for External Studies and Adult Division Leader.
Her social and civic affiliations (current and former) include Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, the Greenwood Leflore Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International, the Leflore County School District Dropout Prevention Task Force and the Greenwood/Leflore Committee on Racial Reconciliation. A proud member of the Greenwood-Itta Bena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, she serves her Chapter as Chair of the Social Action Committee and the Southern Region as a member of the Educational Development Committee.
Politically, she has engaged in campaigns at the local and state level. Her advocacy for voter empowerment and mobilization is shared with the community via “Social Action Sundays,” a talk program broadcasted via Facebook Live under the auspices of the Social Action Committee of the Greenwood-Itta Bena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
She has received numerous awards for her contributions in the areas of education, community activism, and volunteerism. These include “Parent of the Year” (Leflore County Elementary School, the Leflore County School District, and the State of Mississippi), Providence’s “Woman of the Year,” the Greenwood-Leflore Community Service Award, the “Drum Major for Justice Award,” and the Greenwood Commonwealth’s “Mother of the Year.”
She has been the devoted wife of Troy D.Brown, Sr. for 35 years. Together, they are the proud parents of four: Troy Jr. (34), Brandice (30); Solomon (26); and, Kayla (21).
